Five Nights at Freddy’s developer Scott Cawthon has released a new game, named Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator. On the surface, it’s a retro-themed tycoon game where you run your own pizza restaurant. But, as players have discovered, it’s actually something more sinister. Yes, just five months after placing the FNAF franchise on hold and cancelling FNAF 6, it sounds like Cawthon has brought back the hugely-popular YouTube-baiting jump scare horror franchise. TVs are an ugly room decoration when they’re not in use, featureless black slabs our sofas point towards. I’d rather look at a bunch of peaceful fish swimming around. But oh all the moisture those aquariums pump out – I can’t face the mould and mildew. But wait, what’s this? An aquarium app for my PlayStation 4? You don’t say! Coming 13th December for €9.99/£7.99 (an extra 30 per cent PS Plus discount will be available) is Aqua TV, which lets you choose your aquarium environment then stuff a load of fish in. And beyond faffing around with camera angles, that’s about it. A passive experience. The story began with a 1st December blog post from Fred Ford and Paul Reiche, the original creators of the Star Control universe. In it the pair, who recently announced a new Star Control game, said there was a “growing legal conflict” between them and publisher Stardock, which is working on a Star Control game of its own. The conflict appears to revolve around the sale of the classic Star Control games. Ford and Reiche contend Stardock isn’t allowed to sell Star Control 1, 2 or 3 without their permission. “That permission has not been given,” they insisted. Czech developer Bohemia committed to a console – Xbox – version in 2018 as well. “DayZ will be out of Early Access next year,” wrote Bohemia in an end-of-year DayZ update, “and we’ll also finally deliver it to console players in 2018. Over the weekend, the Dam burst. Australian Karl Jobst recorded a 52-second run of GoldeneEye’s iconic opening level, and he declared it the “best run I’ve ever done in my life”. The video, below, shows the run in all its glory. Of note, Jobst spends much of the time looking at the floor or the sky. That’s because it’s faster to strafe continuously and use specific viewing angles to pick up speed in Rare’s influential shooter. Also of note, you go even faster when you’re shot in the back by guards. The only problem with this is, when playing on the Agent difficulty the guards are awful at shooting you. In short, there’s a very low chance that you’ll get the speed boosts at all. But what fans may not realise is how much the project changed from initial concept to release. Essentially, Pocket Camp started life as a different game altogether. In a new Unseen64 video, this early version is described with the internal working title “Animal Crossing: Town Planner”. (It’s not a name I’ve heard myself, but the rest of the video chimes with details gleaned over the past year from sources close to the company.) Gunbird follows on from the arrival of Strikers 1945 and Gunbarich, a brace of Psikyo titles, back in September, and paves the way for potentially more on the way. Zero Gunner 2 on the move, anyone? And why not revive the outrageously gorgeous The Fallen Angels, a fighting game I recently fell in love with when coming across a cabinet in Tokyo? Or I should just be patient and be happy we’re getting Gunbird for now. Gunbird originally came out in 1994 for arcades, before it was ported to Saturn and received a version for PlayStation which featured some inexplicable localisation choices, including changing the title to Mobile Light Force and introducing a Charlie’s Angels-inspired cover. At Paris Games Week in October, Detroit hit the headlines after Sony released a trailer for the game in which scenes of domestic abuse and child abuse feature heavily. In the video we see android housekeeper Kara thrust into an uncomfortable domestic abuse situation. She’s charged with taking care of a young girl who is attacked by her belt-wielding single father. The video tries to get the point across that you’re able to change the course of events at multiple points in the scene. The video shows that one of the potential moments sees the young girl shoot her father as he chases Kara. The Legacy Dashboard Theme hits the PlayStation Store on Wednesday, 6th December, and is sure to rekindle memories of the PS2’s iconic dashboard. If you have the theme, you’ll get a fully recreated PS2 boot sequence, although you won’t see the PS2 logo. According to theme creator Truant Pixel, the PS2 logo cannot be used due to “licensing restrictions”. So, the developers created a mid-boot Easter egg, which changes randomly with every login. It’s a hand-drawn adventure about an unspectacular man playing a fantasy game on his computer, only all of a sudden the game and his life begin mixing as one, and Gary’s life gets very weird. By rights it should be terrible, yet somehow the wry tone and self-awareness – not to mention synth soundtrack – keep Legendary Gary afloat. Maker Evan Rogers has interesting ideas about turn-based combat, too.
